A network of local CSOs and NGOs in Cox’s Bazar to promote a human and gender responsive society through positive engagement with government.

19 October 2017. Today in a press conference NGOs and CSOs of Cox’s Bazar district demanded localization of the Rohingya relief works, they also demanded accountabilities in all forms of relief operations in this regard. It is beyond the means of the Cox’s Bazar district to handle or bear burden alone, Rohingya refugees must be relocated in other parts pf the country, they opined. The press conference was organized by the Cox’s Bazar CSOs and NGOs forum. The organizers also urged the government to conduct an immediate survey on the loss, damages and impact on the environment and resources of Cox’s bazar and to take necessary actions to recover these in the next financial budget.

The press conference was moderated by Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Executive Director of COAST Trust. Secretary of the forum and Assistant Director of COAST Trust Moqbul Ahmed presented the welcome speech. From the press conference a written statement titled ‘We Demand Localization and Accountability in Rohinga Relief Work’ was distributed.

Chairman of the forum Md. Arifur Rahman, Executive director, YPSA said, government should form a special cell to identify short term and long term impact on Cox’s Bazar. He expressed his concern over over use of banners and posters of some NGOs. These must be stopped, he opined.

Vice Chairman of the forum Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said, the World Humanitarian Summit declarion emphasizes on localization and accountability. Almost all UN organizations and International NGOs are signatories of the Grand Bargain process. According to the declaration and the process there must be some changes in working approach of these organizations, so that promotion of local NGOs and CSOs can be ensured. He said, the Cox’s Bazar administration and the army have ensured discipline within a very short time, they have ensured that Rohingya people are not spreading in other parts of the country. But the District administration has other regular jobs to do, therefore, it should come back from the Rohingya refugee management, there should be a relief commission since the number is so big. The commission must be equipped with appropriate human resources.

Co-chair of the forum and chairman of Pulse Abu Murshed Chowdhury Khoka emphasized on the CRC for children protection. He said, children who lost their children should be taken care of keeping them with their relatives.
